"Imagine it. November the Fifth. Outside Holy Trinity Church and enormous bonfire crackles and sparks, fuelled by fences stolen from the homes of respectable citizens. Around the flames men in hideous costumes dance as fireworks explode across the night sky.

That was how Guildford celebrated Bonfire Night in Queen Victoria's reign. The ringleaders were called 'Guys' and the attempts to stop them provoked the Guy Riots. Using lively contemporary accounts, Gavin Morgan recreates this dramatic story of violence and intimidation which gave Guildford a reputation for lawlessness and disorder.

Published in 1992. 140 pages with black and white drawings and maps.
