"It could be said that the county of Surrey has been shaped by its proximity to London. As the suburbs have spread south from the River Thames, they have become London boroughs, changing the allegiance of residents on paper if not in the heart. The pre-war Surrey recalled in this book features a county that had already lost its Thames-side docks, links with the capital by river and rail bridges and vast commercial areas. However, it could still claim the chalk hills of the North Downs and many acres of woodlands, heath, pine forests and farmland, where the cycle rides or rambles to hidden villages could safely be undertaken.

In keeping with the book's title, the author has used personal reminiscences and family anecdotes, while weaving into her text facts about celebrated writers, actors, clergy and politicians. The colourful story also includes the suffragette movement , horse-racing, farriery, crime and the National Trust.

Published in 1996 and reprinted in 1998. 152 pages with black and white photographs and pictures..

It has been stored for a long time and has a slight smell of 'old book'.
