"The aim of this series of little books, dealing with different districts of England, is to quicken the interest of the pupils in their immediate surroundings; to direct their attention to the connection to be observed among certain of the facts of their experience; and to make the School Excursion, whether for Nature Study of the practical study of Geography, more interesting and more serviceable. Each book goves a brief historical and geographical account of the particular district with which it deals; but only the more salient features of these subjects are dwelt on, such as seemed most likely to exercise the pupils' imaginations and reasoning powers and teach them to proceed from the observed facts to the conditions of which they are the result. An effort, also, has been made, to put the information in the simplest language, and in the most directest manner, so that the books may be used in any class in the School from the Junior Classes upwards."
