"There are several good reasons for compiling some record of life in a particular village through the ages. Firstly, it helps to preserve a sense of continuity with the past. Each generation is inclined to think itself wiser than the predecessors; but the vertical line of new discoveries and present inspiration needs to be held in balance with the horizontal line which stretches back into history. Secondly, there is a real danger that with technology prominent in education and popular culture dominating the media, the transmission of our cultural heritage of art, literature, music and spiritual values will not continue. Thirdly, on a practical level, if someone moves into a village and has easy access to something of the story of the village, it will make it easier for them to feel at home and put down roots.
